Members of the Comenius Fellowship Reading and Discussion Group

Monterey, CA: On June 30, 1999,the Comenius Fellowship inaugurated its first weeklyactivity,aReading and DiscussionGroup,with Karen Armstrong'scontroversial work, A History of God: The 4000-Year Quest of Judaism,Christianity and Islam.  

On October 13, 1999, we began discussing our secondselection, Jack Miles's GOD: A Biography, which treats the Hebrewscriptures as literature and tracks the development of God as a literarycharacter who fuses contradictory traits. On January 19, 2000, we startedour third selection, Bishop John Shelby Spong's Why Christianity MustChange or Die,  which presents a vision of changes Spong feels necessaryfor the survival of the Christian church in the modern world. We next readMarcus Borg's Meeting Jesus Again for the First Time,  whichattempts to sketch a rough portrait of Jesus as a "spirit person." On July5, 2000, we began our discussion ofThe Four Witnesses,  by Rev.Robin Griffith-Jones, which examines the Gospels as "The Four Greatest Stories Ever Told"--each written for a specific communityand for specific purposes, rather than simply as source material for compilinga "composite photo" of the historical Jesus. In October 2000, we beganRabbi Neil Gillman's The Death of Death: Resurrection and Immortalityin Jewish Thought.  Our next selection will be JaroslavPelikan's Jesus through the Centuries.

Meetings:Unless otherwise stated, theComenius Fellowship Reading and Discussion Group meetsWednesday evenings at 7:00p.m. at the homeof Billand Connie Dallmann. 

Our next meeting will be on September 19, 2001,when we will discuss Chapters 6 and 7 of Jaroslav Pelikan'sJesus through the Centuries.
